About the colors
Our Churro yarn is available in a wide variety of colors, each of which was developed by the weavers and dyers at Tierra Wools Handweaving Workshop. The colors are based on the culture and landscape of Northern New Mexico where the sheep and weavers live. Our sky blue shade is called Cielo (sky/heaven), while a slightly deeper celestial shade, Guadalupe, matches the color of Our Lady of Guadalupe’s iconic mantle. Cooler shades of grey-blue embody our local land and water, with Brazos (named for the distant blue Brazos Cliffs that mark our eastern horizon line, and the Brazos River that flows from it), Rio Chama (our own Chama River), and Ojito (natural mountain spring). Tierra Amarilla (yellow earth) is the place name of the original Spanish Land Grant that encompassed our valley, and Sangre de Cristo (blood of Christ) is the name bestowed upon the mountain range just outside of Santa Fe by deeply religious Spanish settlers. Our deep, bright red yarn is Chile Colorado (red chile), while medium brown, Piñon, reflects the color of the piñon nut, a local delicacy. You can find Ciruela (plum), Chokecherry (a local deep plum-colored berry), Maize (corn), Green Chile, and Calabaza (squash) in kitchens throughout the valley, while Pollito (baby chick), Afternoon Storm, Anochecer (nightfall), Primavera (springtime), and Viento (wind) reflect the rhythms of a life lived close to the land. And last but not least, the sheep that dot our landscapes represent themselves in beautiful hues of undyed cream-whites, greys and natural blacks.
